About RS-44
RS-44 is the amateur radio payload of DOSAAF-85, a Russian satellite built by ISS Reshetnev and the Siberian State Aerospace University and named for the 85th anniversary of DOSAAF. It was launched on 26 December 2019 on a Rokot rocket from Plesetsk and stayed attached to the Briz-KM upper stage, which is why the orbital catalogue lists it as "RS-44 & BREEZE-KM R/B". Because the satellite turns with the upper stage, its signal fades in and out during a pass.
The transponder is inverting: uplink 145.935–145.995 MHz, downlink 435.670–435.610 MHz, with a CW beacon on 435.605 MHz. It handles SSB and CW. Use LSB on the uplink and USB on the downlink. Ideally let software correct the Doppler on both uplink and downlink so your signal stays on one frequency in the passband; when tuning by hand, most of the shift is on the 70 cm downlink.
What makes RS-44 special is its high orbit, between about 1,180 and 1,510 km. Passes last up to 20–25 minutes, and the footprint is wide enough for contacts between Europe and North America or across Asia. It is one of the busiest SSB satellites, so listen first and use only the power you need to hear yourself.
