About ISS

The International Space Station carries amateur radio equipment run by ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station). Since 2000 astronauts and cosmonauts have used it to talk to schools and to radio amateurs on the ground.

Several modes run on the station at different times. The cross-band FM repeater listens on 145.990 MHz with a 67.0 Hz CTCSS tone and transmits on 437.800 MHz. The station also runs an APRS digipeater at 1200 baud, traditionally on 145.825 MHz and at times on 437.825 MHz; check the ARISS status page for the current frequency. During SSTV events the ISS sends pictures on 145.800 MHz FM, which you can receive with a handheld and a phone app. Scheduled contacts with schools use the station's radios on frequencies announced by ARISS, often with a 145.800 MHz downlink.

The ISS orbits at about 420 km, so a pass lasts at most about 10 minutes and the signal is strong: a handheld with its own antenna can often hear it. On the repeater, give your callsign and grid locator, keep it short, and leave room for others.
