About CO-58
CO-58 (CubeSat-OSCAR 58), launched as CubeSat XI-V, is a 1U CubeSat of the Intelligent Space Systems Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. "XI" stands for "X-factor Investigator", a name inspired by its cube shape. XI-V was built as the backup of XI-IV (CO-57), one of the first CubeSats ever launched in 2003.
XI-V went up on 27 October 2005 on a Kosmos-3M rocket from Plesetsk, together with the European student satellite SSETI Express, the German UWE-1 CubeSat and the British TopSat. Like its twin, it was built to test commercial off-the-shelf parts in space. It carries an 800 mW transmitter for 1200 baud AFSK AX.25 packets on 437.345 MHz and an 80 mW CW beacon on 437.465 MHz, under the callsign JQ1YGW.
The XI project aimed to cut the cost of small satellites by using commercial components and to build up a database of how those parts behave in space.
